Red cabbage is a great vegetable to BBQ. I like my vegetable to still have its crunch and not mushy and BBQ red cabbage gives me the best of both world.

I am aware that I write a lot about meat. I am not going to lie I love meat, I do not think I could ever become a vegetarian. Please don’t think I have anything against vegetarian I do not or that I never eat any vegetable, I do. Just as long as it come with a side of meat.

Anyhow, my future daughter in law is vegetarian and I wanted to find a nice new recipe to make for her in the summer. I find that vegetarian get a raw deal when it comes to BBQ season. it is always the readymade meat substitute burger or sausages. I wanted to make sure that we created something nice for all the family to eat together.

The dressing that goes on this BBQ red cabbage is from my Kao Man Gai (chicken and rice) post. Don’t worry the sauce has no chicken in it. The ingredients for the sauce that goes with this chicken dish is suitable for vegetarian and I think vegan too. The sauce works so well together with the Red Cabbage, it adds a bit of spice and meaty flavour you expect from the BBQ. You can also served the sauce with grilled chicken for the meat eater. A great vegetarian dish for your BBQ this Summer. The dressing adds a spicy meatiness to the red cabbage.

For the cabbage
  • 1 Red Cabbage
  • 1 Vegetable stock cube
  • 2 tbs olive oil
For the dressing
  • 10 g coriander
  • 10 g ginger - peeled and sliced
  • 1 tbs white wine vinegar
  • 3 tbs some brown sugar
  • 2 bird's eye chilli
  • 1 tbs cool boiled water
  • 2 clove garlic - peeled
  • 3 tbs yellow beans
  • 1/2 tbs Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp dark soy sauce

  • 1 Red Cabbage

Instructions
  1. Cut the red cabbage in to 8 quarters - trying not to let the cabbage falls apart. Secure the red cabbage with bbq sticks.
  2. Mash the vegetable stock with olive oil and combine with the red cabbage.
  3. Make the sauce by adding all the ingredients into a blender and blend till smooth. taste and adjust as require. it should be salty, sweet with a hit of spiciness and sour.
  4. BBQ the red cabbage for about 20 - 30 minutes depending on the heat on your BBQ. The cabbage should be soft but still has a bite in it.
  5. Pour a few spoons of the dressing on to the cabbage to serve. served the remaining dressing for your guest to help themselves.
