Well, OK nothing is totally safe, but Linux (love it or hate it) is a lot more secure on the whole than windows, so why not use that surplus laptop to perhaps look after all those external drives full of photos and documents..
Linux isn’t really a windows replacement, its closer now than ever, so you wont be running adobe or outlook etc.. However there are heaps of free open source programs around for you to try! like OpenOffice, Gimp, loads loads more..
go on give it a go!! find the old laptop, you may find you love it.. the install files are found here https://www.linuxmint.com/ HAVE FUN!
Ps, I’m not an expert on computer security I just find it interesting!
I saw a great piece of software on YouTube this week, it monitors the traffic your PC passes to the web and other machines on your network. Its called Glasswire, https://www.glasswire.com/ there is a free version and 2 paid for versions really cool! and very useful..
there are lots of programs around that offer to help.. take care many are full of malware! short of adopting an all Linux experience, there are a few things to discover in the privacy settings in your present operating system.
BE WARNED THOUGH, THINGS CAN BREAK! YOUR RISKING BRICKING YOUR PC..
C4FM has picked up a little more and I’ve put the node back on, its been given less power than a hand held in a puddle, but its there use it! I will script it so that if no one txs into it within 7 minutes it will exit the room its in.. this is to stop the radio from constantly txing for the listeners.. cruel i know, but the radio glows in the dark txing for 2-3 hours!! you have a mic, use it..
